Nicole & Nathan {Mankato engagement}

I can't believe I did not blog about Nicole and Nathan!! Nicole I am sorry! Nicole and Nathan are one of my fav couples to have the pleasure of being a tiny tiny part of their lives. Nicole and Nathan are both from the Mankato area but they met in a Target in Kansas City, Kansas. I always want to say Missouri because that's where I grew up. :) God so had a plan for them. We headed out on a crisp November day to Nathan's grandparents house where Nicole and I discovered this fantastic marsh! I love it! And then we went downtown a little bit to take some pictures in front of these big metal boxes. Nathan kept trying to tell us what the actual name of them are but I can't remember. Wait........is it conexes??? Something like that. One of the best parts too was trying to take pictures while Nathan was jumping over Nicole. We both were laughing so hard. I had to put the camera down and just laugh because it was so funny and I was laying down in the middle of the road. He didn't know he was going to have to do some acrobatics. I guess you just never know what you are getting yourself into with me. :)

Emily ~ Maternity session

Recently I attended a Mary Kay party hosted by my cousin. The consultant teaching us about skin care was Emily and that's how we met. :) Emily has 4 months yet before her third child is born and she is looking glorious as ever. Of course how could I not ask her to be in some pictures for me. I have also been reading Mary Kay Ash's biography called "Miracles Happen". This is the story of an amazing woman who worked so hard to provide for her family and during a time when a woman working wasn't all that common. The more I find out about Mary Kay the woman and how she shaped her company Mary Kay cosmetics I just love it all the more. Lindsey and Kevin wanted pictures of Lauren. She is 6 months old and just a doll. She sits really well in her bumbo chair and she is smothered in love by her parents. I love watching parents who just dote on their children. Even though we were taking some family pictures too they really wanted her to be the focus of our attention. They are such good parents!! :) Of course it was fun for me too because it was fun to watch them try to get Lauren to smile.

For Vicki and Mike's anniversary their son and daughter-in-law asked me to take their pictures. I had never met them before but I was told that they loved to spend time at their cabin. 'Perfect!' I thought. I had been wanting to take pictures at a cabin. Laura and Ryan scouted the location with me; we talked about clothing; and some ideas. At first they both seemed a little unsure of themselves but with a little coaxing they warmed up and let me see how much they adore each other.

My baby sister is 18!!!!! Where has the time gone? My youngest sister is growing up and is growing into a beautiful woman. Rachel is deep. She loves art and theater. She loves having a funky style that's all her own. As far as I can remember she has talked about being an art teacher and I can totally see her doing that. Rachel has this great combination of quiet, thoughtful, goofy, and liking the center of attention. I hope all her dreams come true!

After talking to Laura a couple times and emailing we set up a time to meet. The meeting was set at Caribou Coffee which was completely busy that evening with studying students. We hit it off right away and ended up talking about who was the messiest of her and Ryan, how they met, and great stuff like that. When you can just sit and talk with a couple like you are good friends you know that this is going to work. I had to veto my idea of making huge peppermint candies and creating a set for them but I think our session was still a success. I can still do a set of huge peppermint candies if I want to. :)
Peyton is 2 and just busy as can be. I so forgot how busy 2 year olds can be. You have to be after them every second and watch everything they do because they just want to touch and be into everything. You can imagine then trying to get Peyton to be still for just a couple moments so I can snap a picture or two. We managed though and everything turned out to be a huge success!!! We even captured Peyton's signature smile.....can you guess which one it is? :)

Jenna & Scott ~ Mankato MN Wedding

Lying down to sleep last night my heart was overflowing withjoy, laughter, and love. It wassuch a privilege to be a part of such a wonderful couples day. Jenna and Scott are so perfect for oneanother and it was a tremendous blessing to be able to share in the joy of thetwo of them finally……FINALLY tying the knot. Their first date was in 2006! Words I can think of to describe Jenna: gentle, kind,confident, and caring. She is awonderful compliment to Scott who is: outgoing (in the leastJ) talkative, alwayscracking a joke, and loves attention (in a good way LOL!) One thing I loved more than seeing themjoin their lives together and party with their family is how Jenna lets Scottbe who he is and Scott cherishes Jenna for her sweetness. Scott would lay down his life in asecond to protect Jenna.

The ladies started their morning early at 8 a.m. atJCPenneys to have their hair and makeup done. The staff was wonderful and fast. Everyone was ready to go by 9:30. With our little extra time we made a Target stop forpull-ups :) and stopped by the City Center to check on the reception decorations on our wayback to the church to finish getting ready.

I am so happy to have met Jenna and Scott. It was an honor to be a part of their wedding.

Adelyn loves to play in her pool! She couldn’t wait to get out there. So dad filled the pool a little withice cold water, it still didn’t stop her, although I do think it slowed herdown just for a second. J I love this age when their littlepersonalities are starting to get bigger. They can’t talk a whole lot but more words pop up all the time. Adelyn has this wonderful curly hairthat she gets a little from her mom. And the most wonderful blue eyes! One can see why her parents love her to pieces.

This shoot was just so much fun! I should pick a different word but I can’t think of any thatreally grab hold of the happiness there was. Lauren exudes confidence and smiles. She seems like someone that onceyou get to know her she’s your friend for life. The way she laughs at Mathias is just such an honest pictureof her heart. I truly got my doseof happy. Seriously it justoverflowed from both of them so much it filled up my heart too. Mathias has a quiet strength, youknow he’s going to take care of Lauren to the fullest. These two are just so great together Iabsolutely adore them!

One of the things these two love to do together is go toTwins games. They are avidfans! It’s embarrassing to say butwhile we were shooting some of the Twins were practicing on the field, Laurenand Mathias were so excited! Iprobably said this a couple times because that’s just how I am, but I said, “Idon’t even know who they are.” Ha! Shows how into baseballI am. After our Twinsexperience we headed to some other great spots Mathias’ sister foundnearby. Well nearby after making acouple u-turns. J

This couple lit up my day! I can’t wait for their wedding!

This was definitely one of the most fun groups ever! Amanda is graduating from college with a degree in dance and is headed to Chicago. Sometimes doing pictures for family is more stress than fun. But I was really looking forward to taking pictures for my older brother and his family. They live out in the country about an hour from the cities and have plenty of great locations and interesting things to use for backgrounds. They have three beautiful children: Zack, Emma, and Enoch, who keep them busy, busy, busy.

Then I got to do a little shoot with just Shannon and Nate! I was so pumped!

Love this one too! Actually, I love all of them! But I can't say that can I?

I get so inspired when I see couples who seem like they are truly in love. The maid of honor in her toast mentioned that Andrea and Kyle just seemed to understand each other. That is truly a blessing. Andrea is definitely the most mischievous of the two as you will see in the pictures with the cake. When they first met Kyle was having a bad day and Andrea said, "Smile Kyle." Kyle didn't have a chance. :)

I think that working with couples just gets better and better. I just have to throw out there that my ideal couple are ones who aren't afraid to get a little crazy. :) Ingrid and Cody love to do things outdoors. They met after Ingrid broke her arm snowboarding. So of course they love to go for walks, camp, skiing, riding motorcycle (I would so do that if I had the chance :)), and did I mention riding in Cody's '84 Jag. Yep. He's been working on it for 4 years, so of course it had to be in the pictures. Which I definitely could not say no to that request. :)

Erin is this amazing girl. She is quiet, but has spunk. She's smart, but has a little sass. Erin wants to be a doctor and frankly I think (and this is my opinion) she would be pretty good. Erin loves to swim; life guards and teaching swimming lessons. Her laugh is very contagious. I would try to get her to laugh during our shoot, when it worked then her laugh made me laugh too.

This is a FYI post. I have some really great stuff to post and am bummed that I can't post pictures. We are pretty sure we know why and we are working on it pronto. Hi everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know that over the weekend we moved to a different part of Mankato. We are located in Mankato MN since mid-April. Aren't they so cute?

Meet Andrea and Kyle! They are an adventurous young couple getting married in September. We had such a blast! They are both into art, played soccer, love the outdoors, and swimming. When I was sharing with Josh some things about them he said, "Sounds like we would have a lot of fun together!" He was right! Andrea is silly and sweet with a great smile! Which was one of the reasons that Kyle adores her. Kyle seemed a little quiet at times but that could have been because he couldn't get a word in edge-wise. I was beyond excited when they were up for anything even Kyle's idea of sitting in a tree! Can't wait for the wedding!

Jen and Jeremy know Josh and I from college. Since we moved back to Mankato we have really enjoyed hanging out with them. They have a great family! I was pretty excited when Jen talked to me about doing a family session for them. Their little boys are so much fun! Alex can talk so well and just kept up a conversation with me for most of the session. Elijah has such a wonderful smile that lights up his whole face. It was another hot day and they were just such great sports for putting up with the heat! I think it was worth it!

Wow! It's been awhile, but a lot is happening! First, we moved! Yes we decided to change the scenary a bit and moved to Mankato, MN. We are really looking forward to the summer and we are kicking it off with a wedding this weekend! A lot of work has gone into this wedding that I am so excited to share about!!

First Spring walk of the year!!!

First I have to share the wonderful news of my nephew. He was born March 5th, 2010. He weighed 8 lbs. and 3 oz. and was 20 inches long. We got to visit this last weekend and he seems like such a good baby. He barely made a peep except when he wanted to eat. He was perfectly content to just sleep.

Thank you so much to all of you who entered our contest to win a Love Shoot photographed by Caroline Tran and styled by Jen of Green Wedding Shoes. We had hundreds of amazing entries. Caroline and I both loved reading your stories of love, how you met, and how you imagined your story told. It was super hard to narrow down to finalists. Inspiration: Henri Cartier-Bresson

In the history of photography one of my favorite photojournalists is Henri Cartier-Bresson. He believed "the decisive moment" is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression.
Since I love weddings almost as much as I love photography I have to tell you about another one of my favorite wedding photographers who has followed in the footsteps of Cartier-Bresson: Jeff Ascough. The thing that inspires me the most from these two artists/photojournalists is the ability to capture life as art using only available light. Their work is amazing. Sometimes photographer's can't get around directing a little but in the end the most amazing shots are captured at that decisive moment.

Another thing I really enjoy is designing the covers for the flipbooks. This was the cover design for Hannah and Brad. I love how art just speaks to you sometimes. With this cover I really had one of those "ahhhh!" moments where the artistic process was complete from idea to art.

You are God's Delight

Lately I have been going through a personal bible study called, "Being Yourself". The first section is called "You are God's Delight". I loved being reminded of this. Sometimes I forget that God made me just who I am. That he already knows everything about me and everything that will happen to me. One main passage from this section is Zephaniah 3:17, "The Lord Your God is with you; He is mighty to save; He will take great delight in you; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing." For me this is just such a great reminder of how much God loves us. It was so calming to read again that God is with me; He has saved me and he takes delight in me. Sometimes I get so nervous wondering what people think of me that it was just so comforting to hear that God takes delight in ME. Our God who made the whole world, who takes care of so many people, and who is everywhere all at once. He planned the whole world, he made everything living creature down to the smallest insect. He knows everything, everyone, and cares about each person, animal, and thing down to the most insignificant. I just cannot fathom that such a God would care about me, especially since I have messed up so many times; but he does, and he cares about YOU too.

Don't Be Afraid to Follow your Gut

I recently had the opportunity to go to this amazing intensive called Making Things Happen 2010. My instincts were telling me to not miss this opportunity to meet and connect with a lot of people I admire. My adrenaline was pumping and I was so so excited! I would have never considered going except Emily Ley who works with Lara Casey called and offered me a partial scholarship to go. I cannot tell you how excited I was because I didn't give them my number they found me. But in order to go we would have had to pay for transportation there and a hotel in Chicago where it was. When we were looking at tickets they still didn't have the location of the intensive secured. That weekend was Jason's birthday. Basically I had to make a choice. I cannot talk to Josh about my remorse because he told me to go. He would have taken off school and we would have drove to Chicago. Do we spend the money? Do we pack in the weekend and have this amazing spontaneous trip? This intensive is exactly what I was looking for. I have my own goals set for 2010 and finding a community of artists and creative people who would provide encouragement to reach my goals is so what I needed. I listened to some advice that others were telling me, I weighed out all the things that would go into going, and thought about my life's ultimate priorities. I came to the responsible realistic conclusion that it would be better to not go. WHY? I knew in my gut that this experience would be completely worth the investment. That the opportunity to do this doesn't come everyday; that I needed to just grab on and hold on and just enjoy doing something crazy and then reap the benefits. Basically I didn't listen to my gut. I'm not going to say I didn't regret not going because I'm writing a whole post on it. But at the time I'm glad that we had that family time. We had a wonderful weekend with our little family and with extended family to celebrate our little boy turning 5. But I know I would have come back from that intensive even more pumped to jump into the year to reach my goals and celebrate what I was made to do. I can only hope that some time down the road I will have another great opportunity to connect with people who are just as passionate about life as I am and to meet people that greatly inspire me to be who God made me to be, and to not be afraid to follow your gut.

One huge part of weddings are the CAKE! I love this site Eat Cake Be Merry. The founder of EatCakeBeMerry is Liz Shim discovered she loved creating edible art when she was a teenager. (This is from her website). She attended the California Culinary Academy. After graduating summa cum laude, she traveled to New York to hone her skills working with some of the finest cake designers in the industry.
I will soon learn how to feature some one the "real" way with images of their work and website and such. Until then I hope you at least check out her website. It is fun to just look at such creative yummy cakes.

Josh and I are so excited for weddings! Next summer we will have two weddings in our families to go to.

The first one will be his sister Hannah and her fiance Brad, who just happens to be a musician too. :)

These too are just so great together! We cannot wait!

Hannah is so gorgeous and creative too.

We just had such a great time together, we really should just hang out more. :)

I love "how you met" stories and Hannah and Brad's definitely is at the top of my list for greatest stories. Can't wait until the wedding!

Music

For those of you who know Josh and I, you know how much we love music. Music is such a blessing from God. To me it seems like a tiny piece of heaven we get to enjoy here on earth. It has such an impact on us as human beings. In movies, it tells us how to feel. When you are down, music can lift your spirits. We use it as motivation, worship, and means to express all those gooey feelings of love that we experience. What a blessing music is to our lives and I am so thankful that God gave us such a gift.

Fruit

Oh these are some of my favorites of some of my recent work!! Love these! Sorry. :) Our family eats fruit like no one's business. Sometimes it is just plain sick how much fruit we go through. I am so thankful that my family likes to eat fruit and vegetables and that maybe through that they stay healthy. Life is just never perfect and every day I think I realize how many blessings I need to be thankful for. Now off for a week of visiting family and eating good food.

Highway 92 West

Mia and I went down Hwy 92 to take some photos for my personal work. We had fun going on a road trip! Here's what Mia was doing while we were driving.......

Sometime's she cracks me up!! I was on a mission to find this yellow bike I had seen along the road and we ended finding it past Knoxville. We also saw a brick silo that I had never seen before, maybe they are an Iowa thing and just some great fall nature. Enjoy!

I don't know what I'm going to do with all the pictures I take of Jason and Mia! There are so many cute ones! But I just can't help myself from taking more! I love capturing them and we had so much fun doing this! They are getting to be pretty comfortable in front of the camera! :) Jason usually pulls out a couple poses for me without prompting! If you can't tell from the underwear pics! haha!

Of course Mia had that huge owie (how DO you spell owie?) which she got from Jason. And I was so excited because I got to take some more pictures at this location too, which will probably end up on the blog too. So keeping watching!
